about

I spent over 14 months working on a set of live music that I performed at The Gathering Series in Philadelphia last year. It was a tricky process. I wanted it to feel like true songs performed live. No noodling. I needed to control everything in front of me with the ability to form cohesive, memorable pieces of music that I would practice constantly over the months leading up to the show. I also had to travel with the bulk of my equipment which required me to really dive into pulling out the most of everything I brought with me. And, I was only going to do it once. 13 -14 months funneled into a couple of hours.

I love this set of music. Time moves so fast. I came back with the intention of immediately turning these pieces into a studio album. I got to work pretty quick but I just can’t seem to capture the spirit of these songs. I’m not done trying. A few pieces sound really good. I think the answer is for an EP of some sort. Again, time moves so fast and I’ve never been comfortable working on older things.

As I’m writing this up, it’s Saturday morning in Oakland, California. It's going to rain soon and I’m listening to the beginning of “When We Made the Moon” and I can feel 30 years of thinking constantly about music. If only this show was captured on a multitrack so I could just mess with a few channels that are too loud or on at the wrong time. There’s sheer sloppiness followed by sparks of truly special electronic music that will be impossible to capture again. On the flip side, how often do you hear electronic music with mistakes?

You might see a version of this album come out but my gut tells me I may never get to it.

Of course, there’s a few special people that need to be acknowledged. Chuck Van Zyl who has never stopped making me feel like a true professional musician as you can see by the amazing cover image he captured. As I said live that night, this album exists only because of The Gathering Series. I would also like to thank Vincent Matyi who’s been a listener since I began composing music and who took on the crazy task of performing live Touchdesigner visuals that night.
